Solar Panel Alignment

The most optimal position to face a fixed position solar panel is due South. Due South can easily be found using most any common compass. If you have extra time on your hands, you can move your solar panel periodically throughout the day using the ‘azimuth shadow alignment method’. This method involves rotating the solar panel until the shadow it casts is parallel to the back of the panel. This can be done every couple of hours for optimal azimuth position and will yield about 20% more energy throughout the day.

The most optimal angle for a fixed position solar panel can be determined using the chart below. First, determine your latitude.

To calculate the optimal angle of solar panel tilt, add 15 degrees to the latitude in winter. Subtract 15 degrees from the latitude in summer. During spring and fall, tilt the solar panel to the same angle as the latitude.
