Solar Controllers

The basic type of solar charge controller is the Pulse Width Modulation controller or PWM. The PWM charge controller is a device used to control and regulate the power output from a solar panel. A charge controller is almost always a requirement in battery charging applications. Without it. a battery can easily become overcharged and damaged. A PWM charge controller is usually a multi-stage charging device with several charge modes: bulk, absorption, float and sometimes equalize. During the absorption phase, current is ‘pulsed’ to the battery enabling optimal charging and, at the same time, preventing overcharging and excessive electrolyte evaporation. PWM type charge controllers are the most common type available today and usually the most affordable. PWM controllers are available from many manufacturers, various power outputs, with or without a digital read-out, and for indoor or outdoor applications. Not sure what you need? Maximum Power Point Tracking (MPPT) is an advanced solar charge controller technology that is normally found in residential or commercial solar system. The MPPT controller operates the solar panels at the ‘knee’ of the I.V. curve (their maximum power point) resulting in 15-30% more output power for faster battery charging. MPPT is combined with PWM charge optimization (see ‘PWM Controller’ above) converting virtually all of the solar panel’s energy to battery charge current. MPPT type charge controllers with PWM are the most advanced type available today. MPPT controllers are available from many manufacturers, various power outputs, with or without a digital read out, and for indoor or outdoor applications.
